Stripped bolt on brake line? Tips to remove?
I need to replace the brake hoses on my truck for it to pass inspection. I replaced the left side myself no problem. The right side however has a stripped bolt. Its hard to explain, but the hose runs through the frame rail and is held in place by a square bolt in the square hole of the frame. On the side of the frame facing the engine bay, there is a bolt holding the brake hose onto the actual hard metal brake line. I need to remove this bolt to slide the hose through the square hole. The problem is the bolt is stripped like I've never seen before, pretty much a perfect circle now. I can't use a socket on the bolt as the metal brake line goes through the bolt, and I can't get a good grip with vice grips because of the small space. A crescent wrench fits perfectly back there but the bolt is just too round to torque off. Any suggestions on what to do? Any tools I can use?
You can cut the head of the bolt with a Dremmel tool or small grinder. drill a hole through it and use a tap set to make new threads and use another bolt in its place. or just get another bolt and nut with a lock washer, and save $$.
with the tap set you make a new hole inside the seized bolt and re-thread it. very simple and easy fix.
