What Should You Carry If Traveling With Laptop

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist of the Acer Laptop Battery   First post by: www.laptop-battery-stores.com

Q. I plan to purchase a laptop that will give me the maximum flexibility to use it in overseas locations where the voltage differs from that in the United States. I am aware there are transformers and battery power but I would like to have the ability to use it also on main current where possible. Many Japanese appliances have an automatic voltage/cycle capability and this would be most useful to computer users like myself. Is this technology available? What would you recommend as essential software for any laptop user? - Patrick Hillier, Anacortes.

A. I checked with several of the major makers of laptops and they say that the AC adapters that come with their computers can handle any country's voltage. All you need is a plug adapter so that you can get your U.S.-style three-prong power cord to plug into the foreign wall socket. You can find plug adapters at most electronics stores.

As for essential software, it used to be that laptop users had a collection of "must have" utilities and applications that required relatively little disk space and memory. But I no longer have such a list. Fact is, today's laptops rival desktop systems in processor speed, RAM and hard-disk space. Most units come with four or eight megabytes of RAM as standard equipment, and it's easy to find units with hard drives of 500 megabytes or more.

If you're going to be traveling with a laptop, however, and you're going to be using a modem for communications, you will want to assemble a "survival kit" for the road - what to do, for example, when you're stuck in a hotel room in Indianapolis during a snowstorm and you can't send a fax from your computer because the telephone doesn't have a removable jack for your modem line.

Here's what is in my own traveling kit:

-- Dual Phillips-head/flat-head screwdriver.

-- Mini flashlight.

-- System disk.

-- Extra telephone line.

-- Y-connector phone jack.

-- Portable phone jack with alligator clips for connecting to phone lines.

-- Three-prong outlet adapter.

-- A card listing modem commands for inserting, pausing, answering after a set number of rings and the like. You'll need this since many hotels require special dialing to get an outside line.

-- Extra batteries such as such as  Acer Aspire 1300 Battery.

In addition, if you're bringing along a portable printer, don't forget to pack an extra printer cartridge.

Finally, those traveling overseas will want to include phone jack adapters and power plug adapters

Q. Next time you have an opportunity to reply to people such as William A. Lowell, I'd like to recommend that you mention a resource known as SeniorNet. This is a nationwide organization of volunteers dedicated to providing basic computer education to fellow seniors. Our courses range from basic introduction to computers to applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, telecommunications and personal finance. Classes are small, hands-on, and geared to seniors. Costs are low - just enough to cover expenses - because we're volunteers.

The Puget Sound chapter is the largest in the country. We have a large, talented staff and two learning centers, one for IBM-compatibles and one for Macs. They both happen to be located in Bellevue, but many of our students come from considerable distances to their weekly two-hour classes. Registration for our fall-winter courses will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Bellevue Senior Center, 4063 148th Ave NE. - Ray Hansen, SeniorNet of Puget Sound, 827-7315.

A. I know, this isn't really a question. But rules were made to be broken, right? Given a choice between running your letter and having to try to contort your information into our Q/A format, I opted for the former.
