My wife and I argue constantly about "drying her clothes" and I want to know what the "real story is behind drying cotton clothes like blue jeans and sweat shirts."
We understand that there will be minor shrinkage as the heat causes the fabric to tighten,--- another question???? is the tightening of the fabric from heat, actually shrinkage or is it simply a tightening of fabric??? Will the heat cause permanent changes in the clothes or the fabric to shrink more and more after each time they go in the dryer? Will the clothes wear out a lot faster- how bad is it to use the dryer on "regular clothes"---- Help us...
My husband and I have had the same argument for years.
I have come to the conlusion that it depends on the quality of the clothing. Cheaper fabrics seem to shrink and wear worse from being in the dryer.
Overall, the only items I dry on high heat are linens ( sheets and towels ). Everything else is dried on low heat or is removed from the dryer before completely dry.
Also, I once read that t-shirts should never be placed in the dryer. This came from a man who collects t-shirts on a serious level. He said that they become mishapen in the dryer. Ever since reading that, I air dry our T's. I think they hold up much longer than those dried in the dryer. Certainly, if they have any sort of letttering or design on them it holds up better. We don't get that cracking we used to get in the lettering. I think the heat of the dryer caused it.
