The Kona Dew FS Hybrid Bike Reviewed
The Kona Dew FS stands somewhat apart from other bikes in the Kona Dew range – it’s the only model to feature full suspension. However it does show various features common to other Kona Dew models. All these street hybrid bikes represent great value. The manufacturer is well respected, and Kona style is known the world over.
Primarily aimed and fitted out for street riding – commuting to work, or out-and-about on the lanes at the weekend – a Dew bike will also let you explore paths and gentle trails when you want, which is what hybrid bike riding is all about. Comfort, convenience and ease-of-use are perhaps the most important features looked for in a hybrid bike. The bike should be equally at home on the road and on towpaths and trails. The Dew FS would seem to fulfil all these demands.
The frame is constructed from Kona's 7005 aluminium. The sloping top tube has two advantages - a safe standover clearance and it makes the model unisex. The slope on the FS is actually increased over other models. The paintwork is a smart black, or white & blue, finished with eye-catching graphics.
The Suntour suspension fork is the principal change seen in the FS over others in the range. This will smooth out potholes and ruts on the morning commute, as well as being great for a bit of off-roading. The lockout on the fork can be engaged for stability at speed if you want. The 700mm wheels with 32 mm tyres will give you great speed on the road, which is probably where the bike will spend much of its time.The frame and fork have fittings for mudguards - probably essential on a bike used for leisure and commuting .
The triple chainset gives maximum flexibility on hills and for road speed.
Other features include:-
- Disc brakes by Shimano - hydraulically operated. The main advantage of disc brakes is that they keep the braking surfaces out of the mud and grit, cutting down on wear and improving stopping performance. The hydraulic system makes for smooth operation.
- Twenty-seven gears in three ranges with Shimano RapidFire gear shifters. Changing gear is simple - you just click up and down the range using thumb and forefinger.
- Comfort saddle and flat pedals all make for a practical, no-nonsense bike. Flat pedals will suit most people, but can always be upgraded to cleats if you want.
The Kona Dew FS is a package of quality components, a suspension bike still priced at a level that almost everyone will find appealing. It depends whether a suspension bike is for you. After all, you don’t have to go off-road to experience the benefits of a softer ride!
