I have an 18 year old hvac.When the air cuts off, the outside unit makes a loud humming noise. whats wrong?

Assuming you have a split system unit, have you checked to see if the compressor is still actually running on the outside unit when it cycles off indoors? When you put the unit off, did you do it from the thermostat or the disconnect switch at the outside unit? It's possible that the contactor is hanging up keeping the compressor on. More than likely the outdoor fan would continue to run as well. If the noise ceases when you shut the disconnect switch off, then that is what I would look at. If the hum stops when the thermostat is set to the off position, then you may have a short or ground in your low voltage wiring at the outdoor unit causing the contactor coil to still have some power to it. I doubt that it would be the transformer humming, as that would normally be located at the indoor unit on a split system. If you have a single package unit (rooftop, etc.) then it could be the transformer. A little more information would be needed.
