Setting Up Video Conferencing Equipment
These days the developments we have seen in technology mean that it is now relatively simple to speak with anyone. It doesn't matter whereabouts in the world two people are, video conferencing equipment has made it even easier for you to put a face to a voice. As is the case with any sort of technology, it is important that you understand how to use it correctly. Before you start your first video conference you should make a point of testing the equipment to ensure that it is all working correctly. Even if you aren't intimidated by new technology it will always be beneficial to have a check list to go through when setting up. With that in mind, here are a few helpful pointers to get you started.
Before you start video conferencing, make sure that you have all the equipment that you are likely to need out in front of you. Obviously you will need a working internet connection and power sources ready to hand. It will always be worth having a backup plan in the event that you cant find a plug socket nearby. This may take the form of an extension cable to reach to a plug a little further away or an appropriate battery pack.
You should educate yourself so that you are aware of common problems which you are likely to face and how to correct them if they occur. Complications you are likely to encounter are things such as audio visual equipment not being correctly connected to the power source, input and ourput devices not being properly connected, speakers with insufficient volume or cameras not being corrected. In the case where the computer being used for the video conference is on an office network you may encounter the situation where it has been configured with an incorrect IP address. This is unlikely, however it is always worth bearing in mind. If you make a note of all these potential problems and check them beforehand you will minimise the risk of anything going wrong once you start your video conference.
Make sure that everyone involved in the video conference has had a chance to test the equipment and that they can be seen as well as heard. It is at this point that you will want to perform an audio test to ensure that there is no feedback or unwanted echoes that are likely to distort the sound and compromise the quality of the audio signal. Similarly you should check the volume to make sure that it is not too loud or quiet. Likewise this would also be an appropriate moment to test the video signal as it will of course be important that any images seen should be as clear as possible.
Once all your equipment is set up and you are ready to start your first video conference, try to keep the meeting appropriately short because if you feel obliged to stretch the meeting out as long as possible you run the risk of the parties involved becoming bored with the net result being that nothing actually gets achieved!

In Java, what happens to an open socket connection when you set the socket instance to null?
... instead of calling .close() on the socket instance? Will garbage collection pick it up? Will the socket connection just time out? What happens to the open socket connection?
Don't know Java well enough to say for certain, but you could probably find out with a simple test.
Open your socket.
Run netstat (Linux and Windows both have a netstat command). You should see your connection in the netstat output.
Set the instance to null. Run netstat again and see if anything changed.
Wait. Let the connection time out.
Is it still there?
Do something that makes the garbage collector run.
Is it still there?
My guess is it disappears not too long after the timeout (sockets can linger for a while, so it may not be immediate). But that's just a guess.
