Are there any differences in series II 3800 engines in different GM models?
I am looking at swapping my '99 3800 engine(mechanical problems) from my grand prix and replacing it with a 3800 engine from an '01 Bonnieville. It was rumored that I may need to use a different oil pan and harmonic balancer? Is this true? Or do I need another balancer only if I keep the stock PCM? Is there anything else that may not be compatible between these 3800's? Anyone have experience with these motors?Any thoughts would be appreciated?
just take a look at the oil pan. You might have to use your old coil pack because of the plugin but everything else should work.
The other difference will be on the "plenum" the way the vacuum hooks up. Use your old throttle body and that will solve that problem. Do NOT use the old plenum "the black upper intake" the design of that motor has an egr tube that comes up into that plastic plenum and that warps the plenum and burns a hole in it. Causing water (antifreeze) to go into the motor. That is a common problem. An aftermarket (feelpro) plenum has the updated fix for that. It replaces the egr tube with a different one so it doesnt burn out the plastic. While you are changing the motor, I would MOST definatly change that upper plenum, only takes about 30 mintues and you will be assured to screw up another motor as this is most likely what has happened to yours.
I think it sad that if your purchase that plenum from GM it is still the old design and only Felpro makes the updated one. Shows GM doesnt care about their cars.
That motor also has the thick plastic intake gaskets. Felpro has the updated design that has metal inserts so if the car does overheat it will not crack the plastic and the water seep into the motor. GM and their plastic parts! lol
