What size resister (OHM & WATTS) and configuration do I use with 4.2amp 24v output DC & 2.4v-2.8v 700ma LED?

I believe you divide 4.2 by .700 to get a 6 across ballast and a series of 8 but I'm not sure and I will be purchasing my resister from All-electrics which list their resisters in terms of ohms and watts I also need the same info for the same size led but for a 1.5 amp 12v output. I would greatly appreciate how you calculate to get the answer in simple terms a none tech type like myself can comprehend.

Subtract the LED voltage from the power supply voltage. 24 - 2.4 = 21.6 V. This is the voltage that will be "dropped" across the resistor. We use the lower end of the LED's voltage to make sure current is kept within safe limits.

Then calculate your series resistor R by dividing that voltage by the maximum acceptable LED current: 21.6V / .7A = 31 ohms. 33 ohms is a very close standard value.

The power dropped in this resistor will be V squared / R = 21.6x21.6 / 33 = 14.1 watts
Or if you prefer, I squared x R = 0.7 x 0.7 x 33 = 16.2 watts
The discrepancy is because we adjusted the resistor value; so the actual current will be slightly less than 700 mA.
You'd want at least a 20 watt resistor.

That's a LOT of power to throw away with an LED that's using less than two watts. A switching current regulator would be a much better approach.

For the 12V supply.. 12-2.4 = 9.6V
9.6V / .7A = 13 ohms. Use 15 ohms
P = 9.6 x 9.6 / 15 = 6.1 watts... use a 10 watt resistor. Still a lot of power to throw away.

The current rating on the power supply doesn't enter into the calculations.
